The Lost Ones....
We would like to locate all class mates for the 50th. If you know about anyone on this list, let us know. Maybe you know their parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, spouses, exes -- anything that you might have that would help us find them would be appreciated.

Letter from Brad Crain
D.H.S. Classmates of 1961
Greetings,
It’s almost that golden time, our Golden Anniversary Reunion as DeLand High School graduates, ’61. It’s time to celebrate by gathering together this fall, remembering the “good old days,” sharing stories of our lives over the last 50 years, showing off family photos, having a party or three, and much more.
So mark these dates on your calendars: Friday and Saturday, October 14-15, 2011. Plan to attend the DHS Homecoming and our 50th Reunion activities listed below.
(This letter will be the only mailing/notification about our reunion activities.)
As the comic strip wife said of her husband: “He’s now a combination of sophomoric behavior and senior moments.” Does that describe any of us? Let’s get together and see. Such a combination could be fun!
A small and varying number of our classmates have met on and off now for several months to design an occasion fitting for our 50th. Our aim: keep it simple and affordable. So here’s the plan:
SCHEDULE
On Friday: at 9:00am at the “new” high school will be our first gathering opportunity, the Alumni “Tea” where our class will be especially recognized. There we’ll receive our name tags for use over the weekend and a schedule of Homecoming/Class Reunion events. That gathering will be followed by the Alumni Growl pep rally at 10:00am. Casual attire is recommended.
At 1:30pm all classmates who wish to ride in the Homecoming parade will meet (directions/location will be distributed at the “Tea”). Walter White is kindly providing the truck/flatbed for our class parade entry. The Homecoming theme this fall is “Cirque de Deland,” (whatever that may mean).
At 7:00pm is the football game at Spec Martin Stadium. The school may provide a Bar-B-Q picnic at the Armory before the game, but that is not confirmed yet and any cost associated with that or the game is not included in the charge for our reunion activities. Final information (cost and time) will be provided at the “Tea.” If that event does not materialize, we’ll be “on our own” for dinner before the game. We are still trying to arrange a meeting spot on Friday night after the game (for those who attend the game) and starting earlier that evening (for those choosing not to attend the game). The place/time will be provided on the schedule distributed at the “Tea.” Anyone wishing to host an informal class gathering on Friday night is free to do so and can be announced at the “Tea.”
One final note about the football game: DHS is planning to invite all Class of ’61 game attendees to be recognized at halftime on the field in a brief ceremony commemorating the last class to graduate from the old DHS and the last “Purple and White” Bulldog class.
On Saturday: the main class social event will be at Tom and Linda O’Quinn’s home. Over the decades Tom has been a remarkably generous host for our class reunions; we thank him and Linda for sharing their home with us again. Here is what is planned:
Beginning around 5:00pm we’ll gather at the O’Quinn’s home (directions provided at the “Tea”). With music of the 50s and 60s as backdrop (please bring your favorite CDs to share), there will be an opportunity for conversation and drinks before dinner. The dinner itself will be a catered affair with a nice variety of dishes to please every taste. After dinner the focus is likely to return to conversation, dancing for those in the mood, and perhaps some door prizes and recognitions. Nothing very formal—just a time to catch up on friendships of long standing. The focus—the deepening of connections that began at DHS and, for many, even before that. Dress for Saturday night might best be described as “spruced-up” casual, with comfort as the goal.
We are leaving the day on Saturday open for classmates to get together on their own, following individual plans made at the meetings/greetings on Friday.
COSTS
$50 per person, a dollar for each year since graduation in 1961.
This fee covers only the following:
• Our Saturday evening social: dinner and drinks
• A memento of the reunion: a purple & white tee-shirt
• A special class gift to DHS (Chip Walker has kindly agreed to work with school officials on this)
• Mailings and other incidentals (i.e., postage, parade entry fee, class booklet, etc.)
(The $50 fee does not include tickets to the football game; DHS officials have indicated that game tickets for our reunion class may be gratis. If that proves wrong, the ticket price will be minimal for those who choose to go.)
RSVP: PLEASE RESPOND INDICATING YOUR PLANS TO ATTEND THE REUNION BY SENDING YOUR CHECK AND THE MAIL-IN INFORMATION SHEET BELOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BUT NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 19, 2011.
As you can see, we have focused on keeping this reunion about friendships sustained and renewed and high school memories recaptured. Please fill out and send in the information sheet along with a check (made payable to Class of 1961) for each person attending to: Judy Heath, PO Box 740681, Orange City, FL, 32774.
Be well and travel safely.
Sincerely,
Brad Crain on behalf of ‘61 Reunion organizers
ONE LAST NOTE: Please network with our classmates with whom you have stayed in touch to make certain they have the information in this letter. We think we have mostly good addresses but do not want to miss anyone.
Several of our classmates have worked extraordinarily hard in planning our reunion: Betty Haight Beck; Judy Perino Heath; Alice Rhinehardt Crain; Tom O’Quinn; Anne Lee Sweeny.
And others have been involved in both major and minor ways; their input has been valuable: Mary Fincke McBride, Bob Brooks, Walter White, Chip Walker, Jim Campbell, Gus Gibbs, Richard Gill, Ann Stoudenmire, Tom Harris, Kathy James, Pat and Frankie Thompson, David Thompson, Jenny Bell Mero, Kathy Mattingly Provitola.
To all of these folks—and others I may not be aware of—we owe our gratitude and appreciation.

First meeting of the 50th Reunion brought to order....(shudder)
We met at Dublin Station in downtown DeLand on August 2 to start on plans for Fall 2011....remember how we used to be able to do things in a week? After much laughter and eating and figuring out who was who, it was decided that about 11 of us will form the committee to design a fantastical reunion next year. I think it was everyone who could still raise his/her hand without moaning...no, we took Tommy O'Quinn too.
The first problem is that DHS doesn't even know what date Homecoming will be next year! Seems that all the schools have to get together and plan their games out first and that won't happen till after the last football game of this season is played. Sports! Sigh. So for now we are going to make lots of tentative plans and see what works.
If you have some great ideas (sorry we already used up the mundane ones), please contact us either by comment here or by email.
More info to come as soon as I get it!
